Most people with a basic knowledge of probability will tell you that every spin of the roulette wheel has an identical chance of landing on a certain value as the last spin before, or the next spin after, the odds are the same. However there is evidence to suggest that there may well be a limit to how many red values you get in a row, or how many times the ball will not land on a red value. The key to explaining this concept lies in mathematics.
The truth is a statistical certainty – the outcome of the next game bears no relation to the outcome of any games before, or any other game at all. As a scientist once said “The roulette ball has no memory”. Despite this well known fact, many gamblers are still happy to place bets on “sleeping numbers” – values on the roulette wheel which have not been hit in a long period of time. Most of us know there is no arithmetic knowledge behind these bets as every value on the wheel has an equal chance of 1 in 36 of being hit, and just because a number hasn’t been used in a while does not increase its chances of being hit on the next spin. Conversely, placing a bet on a “sleeping number” yields just as great a probability of being hit as any other value on the wheel, so no one can penalise you for making such a choice.
As with any field which is not fully understood like probabilities, there are a number of superstitions associated with virtually every casino game. Most casinos have any number of myths, legends, techniques and tips which have absolutely no basis in science nor mathematics, and superstitions are as common in casinos as they are in religions. Perhaps another way to earn money would be if the casinos had in-house shops selling lucky charms, horseshoes and rabbits feet?
Many of us have heard of or are at least aware of the commonly used phrase “this is my lucky night”. Even though I personally do not believe in luck, I do however believe that a gambler who has started the night winning his games will continue to play with slightly more concentration than someone who has began the evening on a losing streak. It boils down to being a common human response to the situation – you may call it roulette psychology or just plain human nature.
Some might say that the gambler who’s winning is more likely to be rewarded with more luck, or others may claim that the person who starts out winning is going to carry on his fortunate streak as he is now more focused. This is in comparison to the player who begins on a losing streak, often will become saddened by this and start playing immaturely in an attempt to recoup losses, or perhaps adopt the “regardless of what I do, I’ll always lose” outlook (which almost certainly becomes a self fulfilling prophecy).
However one might define it, there is little point in playing roulette if you aren’t enjoying yourself. Some of us must be reminded that gambling is a form of entertainment, not a quick or sure-fire way of earning cash.
