The game of roulette is fast, exciting and is all about having lady luck smiling down on you. The word ‘roulette’ originates from the French word that suggests the meaning of “title wheel”. In roulette there is a wheel which is divided into slots that are marked with numbers and colored red and black alternately. As mentioned earlier, the roulette table is divided into numbered slots. These slots are numbered from 0 to 36 in French roulette. This means there are a total of 37 numbers on the wheel. The slots 1 to 36 are colored black and red alternately and the slot zero (0) alone is colored green.

The European version of roulette came after the French. The European wheel too has the numbers from Zero to 36 thereby a total of 37 colored slots on the wheel. However the playing field of French roulette differs from the European version.

American roulette has a total of 38 numbers on the wheel because it includes a slot that is numbered 00, a double zero. This slot, like the single zero slot (0) is also green. The remaining slots are numbered from 1 to 37 and are colored red and black as the others.

In American roulette, players play with special roulette chips. There are several colors of chips and each player gets a specific color of chips for himself. This color segregation makes the betting process easier and identifying who has bet what is clearer. These chips however cannot be used for other casino games but when the game is over they can be cashed in or can be exchanged for regular chips.

The European game of roulette uses regular chips for the game. What is different here is that the croupier takes away the old bets using a small spade by which he rakes them in. In the American version, no such spade is used and the losing bets are collected by hand by the croupier.

Another difference is that in European roulette 16 people can play at a table at a time (in online casino roulette its only you and the casino that plays). There are 2 playing fields and one wheel. European roulette table is staffed by 3 persons. The person in the middle drops the ball in the spinning wheel and the other two who are on either sides of the table manages the bets that are placed by players and serve as assistants. Often these two playing fields have got different betting limits. In American roulette there is a dealer who manages the table himself and he has an assistant to sort chips. In all 6 players can play at the table at a time.
