    Croupier Admits Fixing Roulette Games

Roulette croupier Paul Aherne has pleaded guilty to allegations he rigged games of roulette at the casino where he worked, taking cash in return for changing losing bets into winning bets. The 23-year-old was caught red handed on the Casino’s CCTV, apparently moving the ball after the roulette wheel had stopped on various occasions.

One such occasion the result of a customer allegedly offering Mr Aherne £50 cash to change a losing bet into a £1,100 win, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard. He was then confronted by the casino manager the following day and after being shown the CCTV footage admitted to what he had done. Police were then called in, and he was arrested.

Paul Aherne of West Bromwich pleaded guilty to the theft charge and was subsequently sentenced to four months in prison. In addition, he has been ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work for the casino, and as if that wasn’t enough Mr Aherne has also been ordered to pay back the full sum of £1,100 lost.

Prosecutor Helena Miller said the changes would probably have gone unnoticed had it not been for a disgruntled customer complaining to the manager. CCTV was reviewed as a result, thus confirming what we now know to be the truth. Aherne didn’t hesitate to admit his crime when questioned, claiming he only accepted the £50 because he was “skint”.

Judge John Wait declared that Aherne had “breached a high position of trust” and must be punished accordingly. A representative from Broadway Casino felt the ruling for sufficient “We are happy with the sentence.” adding that anyone who is intentionally dishonest “deserves to be caught and punished.”

Mr Aherne’s defense attorney Sarah Buckingham said: “This was done in a moment of madness.” Iterating that Mr Aherne has “lost his livelihood, his previous good character and his good name” as a result of his actions.
